February was filled with some weird ups and downs for me but it was overall a good month. Maybe I’ll start with the ‘downs’.
At my job there are grants that you can apply for in order to fund your innovative idea. In my first year I used this really cool literacy curriculum that played a major role in 80% of my students making 1.5 years of growth. I thought that it might be a good idea for us to invest in this curriculum to help augment the literacy materials we were already using. I spent quite some time researching, writing, and editing this grant and was subsequently turned down without any feedback – a norm that was set for previous declinations. I was pretty fired up about this whole fiasco but I’m over it now since I can take alternative routes to purchasing it.
I got to go see the Body Worlds: VITAL exhibit at the Tech with Krista and a couple of friends we met from OKC. The exhibit was fun overall but had a couple of weird parts. First of all it was really small, I think we got through the entire exhibit within 20-30 minutes. I just don’t think that’s worth the $17 ticket (although we got a deal on Yelp). The second thing that was weird – there were only two depictions of the full female body at this particular exhibit. I’m not sure what to take away from that especially since one of the two depictions was of a woman dancing.
February was also the month that this blog was (re)born. I thought that if I came up with a really clear strategy and spent time planning content that I’d be fully invested in the blog’s livelihood. This wasn’t the case. The blog trailed off after about 2 months (mostly because work picked up).
My friend Liz’s birthday was at the end of this month. It was fun to celebrate with that group. Here are a few pictures from those shenanigans around San José:
The last thing I want to highlight in February was (and still is) very important for me. Every year our site has a Spring retreat with the purpose of providing perspective and reenergizing everyone for the rest of the year. I had the opportunity to make a video that highlighted the work we had done up to that point. This video still sends shivers down my spine every time I watch it.
Overall? It was a pretty good month. (Oh and this post gets a mention.)
